Have you ever been terrible at something, but at some point, discovered that you’re really great at something completely different, and were totally surprised?
For instance, I always thought I was terrible at math. Turns out, I still am. I’m so terrible at it that I have to take my top off to count to twelve! It’s never a good idea to ask me to do any kind of multiplication or dividing either, unless you want me to divide a dessert in half to share, which I can do. I don’t like to do it, but I can do it, if need be. But don’t ask me to divide the bill because it’s just easier to have you pay for it. You know what I mean?
Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, so I discovered a place that’s really terrible at making breakfast, but are really great at making dinner! Okay, maybe terrible is a little harsh, because their breakfast wasn’t that bad, it just wasn’t that good. But their dinner… it was just great!
I didn’t expect it in the least either, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned in life… it’s that I’m really great at quoting people, so in the words of Ambrose Bierce, “A year is really just a period of 365 disappointments” and as soon as you come to realize and accept that fact, anything extra you get that’s good… is a bonus!
Yeah, and another thing I learned is that if you’re stupid enough to go back to a restaurant that completely disappointed you the first time, then you get what you deserve. Or, you may end up getting a nice surprise the second time around! Either that, or get disappointed again, which will turn out to be embarrassing because there’s nothing worse than making the same mistake twice!
Well actually, there is…
So I went back to Jinky’s Cafe several times and I don’t know why except all I can say is that I was possibly hungry at the time.
The very first experience I had with them, was at their Studio City location and I was very disappointed in their crappy breakfast because I ordered their asparagus omelette and it only had the stems in it! Plus, it was $13 bucks, so I felt completely ripped off! I vowed never to return, so when they opened their Agoura location, I totally blew them off, which I’m sure really hurt ‘em!
Then, when they opened their Thousand Oaks location, I went to that one because it’s really close to my place and I must be a sucker for punishment. I went there for breakfast and I ordered their oatmeal, which was pretty good, but how can you screw up oatmeal? But I also got their breakfast potatoes, and they were downright disappointing, and as you know, I’m the potato queen! Okay, maybe that’s not the best moniker to adopt since I don’t want to resemble a potato. Let’s just say I really like potatoes. So when I vowed never to return the second time around, I really meant it!
That is, until I went back a third time.
And when I decided to go back for dinner the other night for the fourth time, no one was more surprised than I, let me tell you! The way I figured it, was if they failed at this last attempt, I’d just never return that often, and that’d be the end of it. But they made the best dinner and I was completely surprised! It was just what I was craving: chicken and mashed potatoes!
They make this lemon garlic grilled chicken breast and it’s super tender and perfectly grilled, and they put this lemon garlic sauce all over it, and I didn’t even ask them to go easy on the garlic since that thing with my co-worker never worked out. Anyway, it came with real carrots and green beans, too, and they sprinkled the entire thing with fresh parsley, which I just love! The entire dish was absolutely delicious!
Plus, the entire staff is really, really friendly! The managers come up to the table and talk to you and try to sell you dessert, which is really thoughtful, and it’s not annoying in the least! Really! No, really. I like it when the staff is friendly, it sure beats the miserable bastards they have in Westlake!
And get this: they have one dollar beers! One dollar! Their motto is: Where beer is cheaper than water!
No wonder the staff is so friendly.
